This big garden was once a market garden in the middle of Musselburgh. The new owners needed something they could look after more easily but they also needed to be able to park and turn their car around in the garden.
A hard standing was created near the house, using a combination of blocks and gravel to give a textured surface. The garden was then divided by a low retaining wall and part of the lower garden changed to a decorative ‘orchard’ with ornamental trees. The mixed hedge will mature to divide this area further and the grass can be left uncut for much of the year.
The planting is soft and exhuberant – giving good year round colour and not too much maintenance. Although overlooked on all sides, the garden now feels quite a private place.
