New housing development at Swinton near Duns – contemporary styling for a country garden

This small garden is both front and back garden for this new housing development in Berwickshire.

The site is fully visible to all the neighbours and although the owners wanted more parking, they were keen to ensure that the site stayed looking very much like a garden rather than a car park.  The access from the existing gravelled area was sloping and awkard with a huge step up to the front door.

The house faces west and one of the issues the owners faced was nowhere to sit and enjoy the evening sun.  The new patio is quite secluded but open and sunny with planting pockets for herbs and alpines set into the paving stones.

The site was divided into comfortable levels rather than difficult slopes and the areas defined with cobbles, oak beams and a small stone retaining wall.  Planting is soft and colourful – keen gardeners, the owners have added a new greenhouse and raised beds for vegetable growing.
